Mike Espy was attempting to become the first African American Senator from the State of Mississippi in special run off election Tuesday night. After his opponent, After Cindy Hyde-Smith made comments about attending a public hanging and posing with Confederate flags and guns, the atmosphere was set for an political upset. Roy Moore had been upset in the neighboring state of Alabama and had sent a Democrat to Congress for the first time. It was not in the cards in Mississippi last night. Hyde- Smith won with 54% of the votes. It was much closer than some had anticipated especially considering President Trump easily won the state in 2016. Things seem to slowly be changing down South, but as for the State of Mississippi, not yet.
