The City of Chicago’s deadline for Jussie Smolett to pay the $130,106.15 he owes after falsely filing a police report is today. In a letter sent to the “Empire” actor on March 28th by the City’s corporation counsel it states that if Smollett didn’t pay before today’s deadline he could be prosecuted using Chicago’s municipal code or other legal remedies. City Spokesperson Bill McCaffrey said ” The city feels this is a reasonable and justifiably amount to collect to help offset the cost of the investigation”. The letter was sent to Smollett after prosecutors unexpectedly dropped 16 felony disorderly conduct charges last month filed against Smollett. The Chief of Police Eddie Johnson and Mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel have both been critical of the decision to drop charges against Smollett. let me add that just last week Chicago elected the Country’s first Black openly gay female Mayor, Lori Lightfoot. She has remained on the sideline concerning commenting on the Smollett case, which seems smart as the new Mayor she knows Chicago has problems much bigger than a false police report being filed.
